The Joy of Finding God: An Easter Story
"Searching is half the fun: life is much more manageable when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party." - Jimmy Buffett
Easter is one of my favorite holidays. I love the sunrise service, the early morning, the celebratory ambience of the day. My kids love Easter, too. They love it for the same reasons, but they’re especially excited about the egg hunts. We’ve done egg hunts inside and outside, in the rain and in the sun. Between Easter carnival egg hunts, Sunday School hunts, and egg hunts at home, they can get as many as three to five egg hunts in a weekend. They are egg hunt experts.
They’re good at many things, but do you know what they’re not experts at? Finding their shoes. I rarely see them search as diligently for a lost shoe—even when we’re already running ten minutes late for school—as they do when they hear there’s one more Easter egg to be found. Let’s be honest: sometimes, we seek the Lord more like we search for a lost shoe than an Easter egg. We know we need to find Him. It would be nice if we found Him. But that sense of excitement and urgency just is not there.
What would it look like to seek the Lord with the same enthusiasm my children have seeking out Easter eggs? I would look for Him in every situation—in the hard stuff and the good stuff. I’d ask, “Where are you working here? What is it you want me to notice?” In moments of boredom, when I instinctively reach for my phone, I would pause. Instead, I’d practice “examen”—a reflective check-in with God—to consider where I’d felt closest to Him that day. In short, I would consistently seek to be aware of God’s presence in every situation at all times.
Scripture promises that when we seek the Lord, we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13). There is nothing more precious in all the world than the Lord. To seek and be aware of His presence nourishes our souls. It grounds us in truth, gives us Kingdom perspective and puts our priorities in proper order. It’s essential for a healthy soul and a sweet reward. When we seek Him, the reward is not just the satisfaction of finding a misplaced shoe, but the joy of discovering a treasured Easter egg.
The Simple Life
- Where were you aware of the Lord’s presence today?
- How have you most recently sought out the Lord?
